Important information you should know:
The State of New York requires all registered motor
vehicles to be insured for liability, personal injury
protection (PIP), and uninsured motorists coverage.
Collision, comprehensive, and other coverage enhancements are
optional.
What is liability coverage?
Liability coverage pays for injuries to
other people (bodily injury) or damages to their property
(property damage) if you are responsible for their losses.
New York State law requires bodily injury limits of $25,000
per person, and $50,000 per accident, and $10,000 for property
damage. Some companies sell a combined single limit for
bodily injury and property damage of at least $35,000 per
accident. Both of these options are the state minimum.
With the rising costs for health care, and
vehicle repair cost, we recommend that you purchase higher
limits of liability coverage at an additional cost. The
cost to increase coverage is not as high as you may think.
What is Personal Injury Protection (PIP)?
Mandatory personal injury protection will
pay first-party benefits to reimburse for injuries sustained
by an eligible injured person for medical expenses, loss of
earnings up to a maximum of $2,000 per month, and other
reasonable and necessary expenses. The minimum amount of
coverage is $50,000, and higher limits are available.
Upon the death of an eligible injured person, PIP will also
pay to the estate of such person a death benefit of $2,000.
What is Uninsured Motorists coverage?
Uninsured motorists coverage protects you
against other drivers who have no insurance and are legally
responsible for injuries to you, or your passengers. The
minimum limit however is only $25,000 per person, and $50,000
per accident. Higher limits are available up to your
liability limit.
What is Collision coverage?
Collision coverage pays for damages to your
vehicle caused by your vehicle striking other objects such as
other vehicles, trees, telephone poles, or for the vehicle
overturning. The standard deductible is $200, which you
will be responsible for in the event of a loss. Higher
deductibles are available, which will reduce the premium.
What is Comprehensive coverage?
Often know as "other than collision", this
coverage repairs damages to your vehicle as a result of:
Missiles or falling objects; Fire; Theft or larceny; Explosion
or earthquake; Windstorm; Hail, water or flood; Malicious
mischief or vandalism; Riot or civil commotion; Contact with
bird or animal; or Breakage of glass. The standard
deductible is $200, which you will be responsible for in the
event of a loss. Higher deductibles are available, which
will reduce the premium. Full coverage window glass is
also available, which would replace the window glass
without a
deductible, with an additional premium.
